state of play

Two simultaneous outbreaks demand the cluster's attention. The Bundibugyo-strain Ebola PHEIC has now reached Europe: 1,094 DRC confirmed cases, 277 deaths, with a French doctor testing positive June 24 after returning from Kinshasa on a commercial flight (300+ flight contacts being traced), and a German researcher case earlier in the month. The DRC outbreak is the second-largest Ebola event on record; no approved vaccine or treatment exists for this strain; Ituri province accounts for 997 of the 1,094 cases. WHO's $518M response plan is funded at ~$910M but field capacity remains overstretched. Separately, Australia confirmed H5N1 in wild birds for the first time, two states in four days (June 20 Western Australia, June 24 South Australia); the Heard Island seabird pathway is not controllable; no commercial poultry infection confirmed yet. The US H5N1 baseline, 500+ herds, 15.2M birds culled, is an unresolved background risk now placed in a new geographic context by Australia's emergence. Watch the DRC transmission rate, French contact-tracing outcomes, whether Australian H5N1 reaches commercial poultry, and any WHO human-spillover assessment change.
