What it is

Manchester City Football Club, based in Manchester, England, is a professional football club competing in the Premier League, the top tier of English football. Since 2013 it has been the flagship club of City Football Group (CFG), a multi-club ownership network backed by Abu Dhabi capital that holds stakes in clubs across the United States, Australia, Japan, Spain, and more than a dozen other countries. Manchester City plays home matches at the Etihad Stadium in east Manchester, capacity 53,400.

History

The club traces its roots to 1880, when members of St. Mark's Church in West Gorton, Manchester, formed a football side for working-class parishioners. It became Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and was renamed Manchester City Football Club in 1894 after a financial collapse and restructuring. The club won its first English top-flight title in 1936/37 and a second in 1967/68, then endured a long decline: two consecutive relegations left City in the third tier of English football for the 1998/99 season. The club returned to the Premier League in 2002.

In September 2008, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and a member of the Abu Dhabi ruling family, acquired the club through Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) for roughly £210 million. The takeover fundamentally altered what English football's financial ceiling looked like, and is now a reference point in discussions of Gulf state investment in sport.

Current state

Under manager Pep Guardiola, appointed in 2016, Manchester City became the dominant force in English football. As of July 2026 the club holds 10 English top-flight titles, six of them won under Guardiola. In 2022/23 City completed a continental Treble: the UEFA Champions League (a 1-0 win over Inter Milan at Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium on 10 June 2023, Rodri scoring the only goal), the Premier League, and the FA Cup. This was only the second continental Treble in English men's football history, after Manchester United's in 1998/99. City also won the 2023 UEFA Super Cup and the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, briefly holding all five major titles simultaneously.

In 2023/24 Manchester City became the first team in English football history to win four consecutive top-flight league titles. Off the pitch, the club faces an unresolved legal proceeding of existential weight: an independent commission is adjudicating 115 charges brought by the Premier League in February 2023, alleging financial rule breaches across multiple seasons from 2009 onward. Potential penalties range from fines to points deductions to relegation. A ruling, and any appeals, could extend well into 2027.

The summer 2026 transfer window brought one of the largest inbound fees in the club's history: Elliot Anderson signed from Nottingham Forest for £116 million in July 2026, intended to fill the creative midfield gap left by Bernardo Silva's free exit.

Relationships

City Football Group, with Sheikh Mansour as principal owner, positions Manchester City as the commercial and sporting flagship of its global network. CFG holds stakes in New York City FC (Major League Soccer, United States), Melbourne City FC (A-League, Australia), Yokohama F. Marinos (J-League, Japan), and Girona FC (La Liga, Spain), among others. The network functions as a player development pipeline and data-sharing consortium. Abu Dhabi's wider sporting portfolio also encompasses Formula 1 (the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit) and golf investment.

Within English football, Manchester City's main rivals for the Premier League title are Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool. CEO Ferran Soriano and Director of Football Hugo Viana lead the executive structure; Guardiola remains the most consequential figure in the club's recent history.

What to watch

The 115-charge independent commission is the club's central open risk. A finding against Manchester City could trigger points deductions or title stripping, though the appeal process makes a fast resolution unlikely before 2027. The eventual managerial succession after Guardiola will be the next defining test of whether CFG's structural depth can sustain results without its architect. The Squad Cost Ratio, the Premier League's new financial cap taking effect in 2026/27, will also constrain transfer spending across the division. CFG's continued global expansion draws ongoing regulatory and political scrutiny over the concentration of Gulf state capital in European club football.
