The world's two great opiate basins are pivoting to synthetics. In Afghanistan, the Taliban opium ban cut poppy cultivation ~20% but coincided with a Methamphetamine surge, seizures in and around the country by end-2024 ran ~50% above Q3 2023, after a near-twelvefold rise 2017-2021. In the Golden Triangle, the Unodc logged a record 236 tonnes of meth seized across East and Southeast Asia (up 24%), with Shan State super-labs at unprecedented output. With agriculture-based opiates in decline, organised-crime groups have made synthetic meth the new business model, cheaper, weather-proof and scalable.

Why it matters
