What it is

Founders Fund is a San Francisco-based US venture capital firm that makes concentrated bets on what its partners call revolutionary technology. Founded in 2005 by Peter Thiel, Ken Howery, and Luke Nosek, three alumni of the original PayPal team, the firm is known for investing early and large in a small number of companies, and for backing founders operating outside mainstream Silicon Valley consensus.

The firm's investment philosophy holds that the safest path to outsized returns is backing transformative, capital-intensive bets in aerospace, defense, AI, and biotech, where technical risk is high but competitive moats, once built, are very deep. Founders Fund does not publish target fund sizes, ownership thresholds, or fee schedules.

History

The firm raised its first fund of US$50M in 2005, making SpaceX its signature early bet as the first institutional investor in the company. Facebook followed in the same vintage. A second fund of US$220M closed in 2007, and successive raises continued: US$250M (2010), US$625M (2011), US$1B (2014), and US$1.3B (2016). Each fund concentrated on a small number of companies, with Palantir Technologies, Stripe, and Airbnb among the foundational core of the later vintages.

By 2025, total assets under management had reached approximately US$17B. In April 2025, the firm closed Founders Fund Growth III at US$4.6B for late-stage investments, the largest capital raise in its 20-year history at that point. The fund was fully deployed in under 12 months.

Current state

In May 2026, Founders Fund closed Growth IV at US$6B, a new firm record. Of the total, US$4.5B came from limited partners including sovereign wealth funds, and US$1.5B from partners and employees. The fund is targeting roughly a dozen companies, continuing the concentrated strategy.

The firm's recent deployment has tracked the two dominant themes in US venture capital: AI infrastructure and defense technology. Growth III backed Anthropic (US$1.25B), Anduril Industries (US$1B), OpenAI, Cognition AI, Stripe, and Ramp. Founders Fund also led the June 2026 US$435M Series C for NewLimit, a US longevity biotech firm working on cellular reprogramming (see NewLimit Series C). The SpaceX position has become the firm's most visible windfall: a cumulative US$671M invested over nearly 20 years has translated to an estimated US$18.2B stake value following the SpaceX IPO, roughly a 27x return.

The firm is one of the defining participants in the surge of US defense-tech venture funding in 2025 and 2026. Its backing of Anduril and co-led rounds in European defense startups such as Dutch firm Onodrim place it at the center of a structural shift in how the US and allied defense industrial bases are being rebuilt (see defense-tech funding record).

Relationships

Peter Thiel chairs the firm and sets investment philosophy. He co-founded PayPal (acquired by eBay in 2002 for US$1.5B) and was Facebook's first outside investor. His political activity, including advising the US Trump campaigns in 2016 and 2024, draws regulatory attention to the firm's government-adjacent portfolio and creates tension with portions of the technology sector.

Trae Stephens, a Founders Fund partner, is also a co-founder and board chair of Anduril Industries, making the firm's position in that company more than arms-length. Ken Howery served as US Ambassador to Sweden from 2019 to 2021 before returning to Founders Fund. Luke Nosek co-founded Gigafund, a vehicle focused exclusively on SpaceX, alongside his Founders Fund role. Mike Solana, the firm's chief marketing officer, publishes Pirate Wires, a technology-politics newsletter with a substantial US readership.

What to watch

The deployment pace and sector composition of Growth IV will indicate whether Founders Fund deepens its current AI and defense concentration or diversifies. Regulatory scrutiny of Thiel's political ties and the firm's sovereign wealth fund LP relationships is a live issue in Washington. NewLimit's first human clinical trial will test the longevity biotech thesis. The SpaceX windfall, once fully realized through IPO share sales, would rank among the largest single-investment returns in US venture history if the company's valuation holds.
